What are the types of open wounds?

Below is a list of the types of wounds :

Incisions/lacerations - Cuts caused by sharp objects like knives, a razor, a glass shard etc.
Abrasions - When the skin rubs against a rough surface.
Avulsions - When the skin tears away unexpectedly like in an accident or animal attack.
Puncture - It's a hole in soft tissue from needles, splinters and gunshot wounds.

What are the types of wound dressings done by wound care specialists?

The types of wound dressings available at the Specialty Care Clinic wound care centre are :

Cloth dressing - Used for small patches of broken skin and are used by wound care specialists to provide a first layer of protection to the wound.
Foam dressing - Used for foul-smelling wounds because they’re really absorbent and bacteria can’t enter due to selective permeability of the foam.
Transparent dressing - These are made of clear film on larger wounds such as incisions, burns, ulcers and IV sites.
Hydrocolloid dressing - These are non-breathable, self-adhesive dressings and form gels on the wound surface after absorbing water.
Hydrogel dressing - Used for dry wounds, second degree burns or necrotic infected wounds.
Alginate dressing - Used for extreme wounds with drainage with a gel-like covering for ulcers and burns.
Collagen dressing - Used as a temporary skin dressing for wounds like ulcers, transplant sites, and surgical wounds.

When to call your wound care specialist?

You should call your wound care specialist when :

You have pain, redness and swelling at the wound site
The wound is deeper and bigger.
The wound becomes filled with pus or becomes yellow, green or tan.
You have a fever of 100.5°F or higher.

Multidisciplinary Approach

Both how a wound is managed and how long a wound takes to heal have a very significant impact on whether there will be scarring and how problematic any scarring becomes. The consultations are led by specialists, pooling knowledge and disciplines together at the same consultation. This ‘multidisciplinary’ approach has been shown to lead to the best outcomes and this best practice is provided at Specialty Care Clinics. Sadly, ulcers and wounds are often not given the attention and care needed to heal. They can carry a tremendous burden for the patient which is often underestimated. Wound Service

A chronic, non-healing wound is not a disease, but rather a complication of one or more underlying conditions. Non-healing wounds require specialist treatment to ensure that to consider and manage any of these conditions and promote the progression of the wound to healing. We provide a thorough diagnostic evaluation, followed by a carefully designed case management program.

The diagnostic and treatment plan is fully documented and communicated to your primary provider who remains an active member of the wound management team. With a healing rate of more than 80%, our program helps many patients completely heal within a few months.
